TOEFL Score Calculator

From January 21, 2026, TOEFL reports each section on a 1–6 scale in half-band steps. The overall band is the average of the four section bands, rounded to the nearest half band. ETS also supplies a comparable 0–120 total during the transition. This calculator provides a practice estimate.

How to interpret your estimate

The newer scale makes it easier to compare the four skills on a common reporting scale. Start with the section scores you actually have, and choose the matching input scale above. If you only know an old overall total, use the second tab. Keep a note of where each score came from: an official score report, a timed practice test, or an informal exercise. A calculator cannot make those different sources equally reliable.

A half-band covers several points on the older scale, and the boundaries differ by section. That is why the same old Reading and Speaking scores can produce different new bands. The tables are lookups, not a formula that multiplies every old score by a fixed factor. When you enter a band, the tool returns the associated interval rather than inventing an exact section score. Use the interval as context for planning, especially when a program asks for a minimum in one skill.

ETS describes the transitional old-scale total on its score report as a midpoint estimate of the corresponding range. Here, entering old section scores preserves their actual sum. Entering new bands shows the published overall comparison interval. These are deliberately labeled separately so you can see which information was supplied and which was inferred. Neither output predicts exactly what you would receive on a different exam date.

For example, Reading 24, Listening 26, Writing 22 and Speaking 20 convert to bands 5, 5.5, 4.5, 4. Averaging and rounding gives overall 5 (C1), while adding the original scores gives 92. That total sits outside the separate 95–106 comparison interval for band 5. This is possible because section conversion and total conversion follow different lookup paths; it is not an arithmetic error.

For your next practice session, look beyond the overall estimate. A stronger skill can raise an average while another section still needs work. Choose a focused exercise, review the feedback and compare later attempts under similar conditions. For applications, confirm the institution’s current requirements directly, including section minimums and accepted test dates. Save a link to that admissions page alongside this estimate, and contact the program if its published policy is unclear.

Frequently asked questions

What is a good TOEFL score in 2026?

A useful target is the score required by your program. For context, band 5 aligns with CEFR C1 and an ETS total comparison of 95–106. Check both overall and section requirements before setting a study goal.

What is 100 on the old TOEFL in the new scale?

An old total of 100 falls in the 95–106 range, corresponding to band 5 and CEFR C1. This is a score comparison, not a prediction of your next test result.

How is the overall band calculated?

Average the four section bands, then round to the nearest half band. An average of 5.125 becomes 5; 5.25 becomes 5.5. The calculator uses the same overall scoring function as our practice reports.

Why does my section-score sum differ from the overall comparison range?

The example scores 24 / 26 / 22 / 20 sum to 92, but their section bands average to an overall 5. The separate total comparison for band 5 is 95–106. Converting each section and rounding an average is a different operation from looking up a total.

Do universities accept the new scale?

Requirements are set by each institution and may differ by program or application cycle. Read the university’s current admissions page, including minimum section scores, accepted test dates and any additional language conditions.
