TOEFL Listen and Repeat Practice

TOEFL Listen and Repeat asks you to hear and repeat 7 sentences in one shared setting. Each recording window follows sentence length, from 8 to 12 seconds in this practice set. Focus on preserving the words and speaking clearly. Our estimated feedback shows repetition completeness, pronunciation and fluency after each response.

Listen to the audio, then answer after the cue. Your microphone audio is sent for scoring and saved privately for up to 30 days. Retrying a failed score is free; recording a new response uses another score.

How it’s scored here

The speech engine checks the words you repeated and provides pronunciation and fluency signals. We convert those signals into an estimated task score, then highlight missed or unclear words and available phoneme feedback. Read the speaking scoring rules.

Tips for a complete, clear repetition

  • Remember short meaning groups, then connect them in the order you heard.
  • Keep small grammar words such as articles and prepositions; they help preserve the complete sentence.
  • Give the second half extra attention. The “memory back half” suggestion identifies when later words were missed more often.
  • Speak at a comfortable pace. A “too fast” tip means clarity and completeness matter more than speed.
  • Open highlighted words to check vowel sounds, then say the whole phrase naturally.

Frequently asked questions

How many sentences are in Listen and Repeat?

The free set has 7 sentences in one setting. Paid access adds the corresponding tasks from the other practice sets. Questions are original practice material.

How much can I practice for free?

Anonymous visitors receive 3 speaking scores per UTC day. A verified free account receives 11; paid access receives 300. The allowance is shared across speaking practice, including these drills. Recording a fresh response uses another score; failed evaluations can be retried without credits.

Can I read the sentence before speaking?

Listen before you speak. Practice sentences stay hidden during playback and recording, then appear with word-level feedback. The example below explains the task; each attempt uses its own 8–12-second recording window.

When will I get feedback?

Listen and Repeat streams to the speech engine while you record. We aim to show feedback within two seconds after recording finishes; network conditions and service availability can affect that time.

Are my scores official, and are my recordings saved?

Scores are practice estimates and are not official TOEFL results. Drill recordings are saved privately for up to 30 days for evaluation and replay. We do not use your answers or recordings to train AI models; evaluation providers’ terms also apply. See How we score and our privacy policy for details.

Practice recordings are private. Read the recording and retention policy. For a timed section, explore TOEFL speaking practice tests.
